Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

NHWCA® is the national certification board for multi-skilled, stacked allied health credentials. Below are the most common questions from candidates, schools, employers, and workforce partners.

Getting Started

What is NHWCA® and what makes it different?

NHWCA® (National Healthcare Workers Certification Association) is a certification board that issues federally protected certification marks and offers multi-skilled, stacked pathways (3-in-1 and 5-in-1). This model certifies the cross-training employers actually hire for and lets schools deliver more value without multiple redundant exams. Learn more: How We Differ.

Are NHWCA® programs accredited?

NHWCA® is a certifying body, not an accreditor. Our programs align to recognized certification standards and best practices for exam development, security, and renewal. See our statement: Accreditation & Recognition.

Which credentials can I earn?

We offer credentials across clinical support, laboratory & diagnostics, imaging & radiology, surgical & perioperative, cardio/emergency, administrative & billing, behavioral/community/research, plus stacked pathways. Browse the full list: All Certifications.

Eligibility & Applications

How do I qualify to sit for an exam?

Most credentials allow one or more pathways: (1) program graduate from an allied health training program, (2) verified on-the-job training from an approved facility, or (3) documented experience in the role. See the eligibility on each credential page and apply here: Apply/Register.

Do I need CPR or other prerequisites?

Some roles require active CPR or role-specific prerequisites; others do not. The requirement is stated on each credential’s page and during application. When required, CPR must be current at time of certification or renewal.

Exams & Scoring

What is the exam format and passing score?

Exams follow a blueprint based on Job Task Analysis. Most credentials use a timed, multiple-choice exam with domain weightings published on the credential page. Passing standards are set through a defensible standard-setting process. See each exam’s blueprint and timing before you register.

Is testing online or in-person?

Delivery options include secure online proctoring and approved test sites. Identity verification and exam security rules apply to all formats. Details are provided during scheduling.

When will I get my results?

Most candidates receive pass/fail results shortly after exam completion, subject to security review. Official records and next steps (credential issue or retake options) appear in your portal and, when applicable, in the Registry.

Multi-Skilled & Stacked Pathways

What is a “stacked” credential?

A stacked pathway awards multiple credentials from one standardized exam (e.g., 3-in-1 or 5-in-1). This reduces cost and time while certifying the cross-functional skills employers need. See: Why Stacked Credentials Matter.

Do stacked exams dilute rigor?

No. Stacked pathways integrate overlapping domains while preserving role-specific competency. Forms are assembled to the blueprint and statistically equated to ensure fairness. Read our process: Standards & Exam Development.

Registry & Employer Verification

How do employers verify NHWCA® credentials?

Employers can search the NHWCA® National Registry to confirm title and status. Start here: Verify a Credential.

What information is visible in the Registry?

Registry entries typically include the certificant’s name, credential title/abbreviation, status, and renewal window. More details may be available to verified employer partners.

Renewal, CEU & Lapse

How often do I renew and what is required?

Renewal keeps credentials current and verifiable. Requirements vary by credential but generally include CEU, continued competence attestations, and a no-lapse policy. Specifics appear on each credential page and in renewal reminders.

What if my credential lapses?

Lapsed credentials are listed as inactive in the Registry. Depending on time elapsed, you may renew with late fees and CEU or be required to retest. Instructions are provided in your portal.

Retakes, Refunds & Accommodations

What are the retake rules?

Candidates who do not pass may retake after a short waiting period to protect exam integrity. Retake fees and limits are shown at scheduling. Practice items and domain feedback help you focus preparation.

Do you provide testing accommodations?

Yes. NHWCA® provides reasonable accommodations upon documented request while preserving the measurement intent of the exam. Submit documentation during application; we’ll confirm next steps.

Schools, Employers & Workforce Partners

How do schools become Approved Training Partners?

Apply online and map your curriculum to our exam blueprints. Approved partners may use the NHWCA® seal, schedule cohorts, and access instructor tools. Start here: Approved Schools & Training Partners.

Do you partner with hospitals, clinics, or staffing agencies?

Yes. We align stacked pathways to job classifications and float-pool needs, and we support bulk verification. Learn more: Employer Partnership & Workforce Programs.

Integrity, Policies & Appeals

How do you ensure exam quality and fairness?

Through formal role analyses, blueprints, multi-stage item review, pilot testing, standard setting, and statistical equating—plus secure delivery and identity controls. Read: Standards & Exam Development.

What is your Code of Ethics?

The Code protects patients, the public, and credential integrity. It covers conduct, scope, conflicts, exam security, reporting, sanctions, and appeals. See: Code of Ethics & Professional Conduct.

How do I file an appeal or complaint?

Follow the steps and timelines in our policy. Appeals typically must be filed within 30 days of an adverse decision. Start here: Appeals, Complaints & Discipline.

Titles, Abbreviations & Trademark Use

How should I list my NHWCA® credentials on a résumé?

Use the exact title and abbreviation issued. Example: “Sarah Johnson, NC-MSMA, NC-PT, NC-EKG — Nationally Certified Multi-Skilled Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician & EKG Technician (NHWCA®).”

Can schools use NHWCA® logos and credential names in marketing?

Approved partners may use the NHWCA® Approved Training Provider seal and credential names per brand guidelines. Misuse of marks may result in sanctions or removal from the partner registry.

Payments, Privacy & Data

How are payments handled?

Payments are processed by a third-party processor; NHWCA® does not store full card numbers. Transaction status will appear in your portal and email receipts.

What’s your privacy policy?

We collect and use candidate/school/employer information to operate certification, registry, and partner programs, with appropriate safeguards. See: Privacy Policy.
