Renewal Policy
NHWCA® credentials renew annually. To remain active and verifiable in the National Registry, certificants must meet the requirements below before the expiration date.
Annual Renewal Requirements
- Active Practice (Primary Path): Document at least 1,000 hours of role-relevant work in the prior 12 months OR
- CEU Alternative (if < 1,000 hours): Complete 10 CEUs relevant to the credential’s content domains before renewal.
- CPR (if required): Maintain a current CPR card for credentials that list CPR as a requirement on the credential page.
- No-Lapse Policy: Renew before your expiration date to keep your Registry status active.
What Counts Toward 1,000 Hours?
Hours may include paid employment or documented clinical practice in settings aligned to your credential (e.g., hospitals, clinics, labs, imaging centers, dental practices, community health, research sites, urgent/ER). Administrative time directly tied to the role is eligible.
Acceptable Documentation
- Employer letter or supervisor attestation with dates, department/unit, and approximate hours
- Payroll/HR hours report or staffing system export
- Contract/assignment summary from a staffing agency
CEU Alternative (10 CEUs)
If you do not meet the 1,000-hour requirement, complete 10 CEUs in the renewal year. CEUs must be directly related to your credential’s domains (e.g., clinical procedures, diagnostics, safety/compliance, patient care, emergency response, admin/billing).
Acceptable CEU Activities
- Accredited online courses, employer in-services, workshops, or conferences
- Simulation labs, skills refreshers, or protocol updates
- Role-specific compliance/risk training (HIPAA, infection control, radiation safety, etc.)
Keep completion certificates or transcripts; CEUs may be audited.
How to Renew
- Log in to your NHWCA® candidate portal and open your credential.
- Select Renew and choose your path:
- Active Practice: Attest and upload documentation for 1,000 hours; or
- CEU Alternative: Upload documentation for 10 CEUs.
- Confirm CPR (if required by your credential) and submit.
- Once processed, your status updates to “Active – Renewed” in the Registry.
If Your Credential Lapses
- Status changes to Inactive in the NHWCA® National Registry.
- Reactivation may require the CEU path and/or retesting depending on time lapsed.
- Follow the prompts in your portal for the fastest path back to active status.
Audits & Verification
NHWCA® conducts random audits. Keep supporting documents for your chosen path (hours or CEUs). Misrepresentation may result in sanctions under the Appeals, Complaints & Discipline Policy.
